About John Currie

John Hugh Currie, C.M., LL.D. (Hon.)

In Memory of John Currie
February 24, 1930 – October 13, 2022

John Currie was the Chair of the 1983 Western Canada Summer Games that were the impetus for the development of the MNP Community & Sport Centre. Mr. Currie was the inspiration behind the John Currie Amateur Sport Legacy Fund, providing bursaries to hundreds of athletes in support of their athletic goals and dreams. In 2021 Mr. Currie was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame for his involvement at the centre and the greater Calgary area. He will be missed.

John Currie, community champion and President of the 1983 Western Canada Summer Games, was a key figure in the development and funding of MNP Community & Sport Centre (then known as Lindsay Park Sports Centre), the flagship facility of the Games. “We want the amateur clubs to be able to use MNP Community & Sport Centre. That is the main reason we went after the Games.”

As a mentor, community leader, as a business person, and as a man who put community service at the forefront of his priorities, he has been an inspiration to many. (taken from St. Francis Xavier University convocation and awarding of an Honorary Degree to John Hugh Currie, 2008)

His lifetime voluntary contributions to the city of Calgary and the province of Alberta extend to the arts, education, athletics and business. He has served as an advisor to help promote business partnerships with various educational institutions through the province. A former president of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, he demonstrated his dedication to economic growth in the city and encouraged business opportunities for Native peoples. (taken from Order of Canada Investiture, May 7, 1998)
